What happens in IJmuiden

IJmuiden sits at the seaward end of the North Sea Canal, behind the largest sea lock in the world. It serves the offshore wind farms off the Dutch coast, hosts crew transfer vessels, service operation vessels and survey vessels, and handles the Felison Terminal ferry link to Newcastle alongside a working fishing harbour.

For crew transportation the practical consequence is variety: one day a two-person survey team to a quay in the Haringhaven, the next a full technician crew change for an SOV, the day after a coach of contractors for a mobilisation. Each requires different vehicles and different access arrangements.

Getting to IJmuiden reliably

The route from Schiphol runs via the A9 and A22 through the Velsertunnel, or the A8 and the Wijkertunnel. Both tunnels close for maintenance on a published schedule and both can block completely after an incident, which turns a 40 minute run into 90. Our drivers check tunnel status before departure and reroute via the Velsertunnel, the Wijkertunnel or, for local moves, the Pontplein ferry across the canal.

For sailings that depend on a lock cycle we plan arrival well before the reporting time. Missing a lock is not like missing a train: the next opportunity can be hours away and the vessel will not wait.

Crew accommodation in the IJmond

Crews waiting on a weather window or a vessel arrival are usually accommodated in IJmuiden, Beverwijk or Haarlem. We run the daily transportation between those hotels and the quays, including the early morning departures that hotel shuttles do not cover, and the late night pickups when a vessel comes alongside at 23:00.
