Access, gates and security procedures

Dutch ports operate under ISPS security rules. Vehicle access to a terminal usually requires prior notification of the driver name, vehicle registration and visit reference, and some terminals require the agent to arrange a gate pass in advance.

When you book, tell us the terminal and the agent or vessel contact. We handle the notification where the terminal allows a transport operator to submit it, and where the pass must come from your side we tell you exactly what the terminal needs and by when. It avoids the very common situation of a crew sitting at a gate at 05:00 with no one to authorise entry.

Timing around tides and vessel movements

Vessels do not depart on round hours. A pilot booking, a lock cycle at IJmuiden or a tidal window at Eemshaven fixes the departure, and the crew must be aboard well before it. We build in a margin for the last stretch of port road, which is often slower than the motorway leg, and we plan return journeys knowing an arriving vessel may be two hours late off the pilot.
