One town, several harbours

IJmuiden is not a single quay. The Felison Terminal handles the Newcastle ferry and some offshore movements; the Halkade and adjacent quays serve offshore wind vessels; the Haringhaven, Vissershaven and Middenhaven host a mix of workboats, fishing vessels and support craft. Velsen-Noord across the canal is different again.

A booking that says only 'IJmuiden' leaves the driver guessing. Give the harbour, the quay and, where possible, the vessel name.

Tunnels decide the journey time

Getting in and out means crossing the North Sea Canal through the Velsertunnel or the Wijkertunnel. Both close for scheduled maintenance, usually overnight, and both can shut without warning after an incident. When one closes the other absorbs the traffic and journey times roughly double.

A driver who checks tunnel status before leaving Schiphol, and who knows the alternative, is the difference between a 40 minute and an 80 minute transfer.

Accommodation in the IJmond

Crews waiting on a weather window are usually housed in IJmuiden, Beverwijk, Velsen, Santpoort or Haarlem. The practical advantage is proximity: a fifteen minute transfer to the quay at 05:00 is far more robust than a run from Schiphol or Amsterdam. Book accommodation early during busy offshore wind periods, when local hotels fill with technicians.

• Reporting time on board and any lock or pilot constraint
• Whether the vehicle may enter the terminal and who arranges access
• Passenger count and full luggage volume
• Contact person on the quay with a mobile number
