Schiphol to Den Helder: offshore crew transportation

The journey

From Schiphol the route runs A9, A7 and N250, roughly 90 kilometres and normally 75 to 90 minutes. The final stretch is not motorway, and in winter the coastal roads can be slow. There is no realistic public transport alternative for a crew with offshore luggage at 05:00.

Working backwards from the check-in

Helicopter check-in deadlines are firm. Crews are usually asked to report between 60 and 90 minutes before the flight, and a crew that misses it loses the slot. We recommend departing Schiphol at least two and a half hours before the reporting time, and considerably earlier during the morning peak on the A9.

Where the flight is early morning, a hotel in Den Helder the night before is almost always better than a pre-dawn run from an airport hotel. The crew sleeps, the transfer is fifteen minutes, and one road incident cannot cost the flight.

Weather is part of the plan

Coastal fog and offshore wind regularly delay or cancel helicopter movements. A crew that arrived at 06:00 may still be waiting at 14:00, or be sent to a hotel for the night. Return transport should therefore be arranged flexibly, confirmed against the actual flight status, and re-timed without penalty when the delay comes from the weather rather than the booking.
